Spa start up & Maintenance - Chlorine & bromin

Chlorine & Bromine, the 2 most popular ways to care for your spa

Getting your spa or hot tub started the right way increases your comfort, enjoyment & protects your investment.  Here's what to do:

Special note: If your spa has been operational or NOT operational for any period of time, we strongly  recommend treating the spa FIRST with a spa plumbing cleaner such as product  such as  AquaFinesse Spa Clean Tablet or Hot Tub Serum Total Cleanse to attack & remove the accumulated biofilm in the plumbing lines, even if your tub is brand new. Cleaning the plumbing lines gets rid of stuff hiding in those concealed places where bacteria & problems hide & breed.  Perform a Purge, Drain & Refill before your start.

  1. Fill spa or hot tub with water.  Add 1.0 oz. SpaGuard Stain & Scale Control per 300 gallons of spa water.
  2. Once filled, start your equipment following the manufacturer's instructions.
  3. Add 1.0 oz. SpaGuard Water Clarifier per 300 gallons.  Circulate for about 5 minutes.
  4. Using a BioGuard/SpaGuard 4 way Test Strip, test for Total Alkalinity, Calcium Hardness & pH.
  5. Balance the Total Alkalinity, Calcium Hardness & pH of the spa water.**
  6. Apply SpaGuard Chlorinating Concentrate or Brominating Concentrate or in a Bromine Floater, float about 1 tablet per 100 gallons of spa water according to label instructions. Establish a proper chlorine residual of 1.0 to 3.0 ppm chlorine or 4.0 to 6.0 ppm of bromine.
  7. Add 1.0 oz. SpaGuard Natural Spa Enzyme per 100 gallons of spa water.

** Special Note: If using SpaGuard Spa Sentry, DO NOT balance the Calcium Hardness. Spa Sentry will take care of this.  Also, DO NOT turn on the spa or hot tub's heater until the water has cleared through filtration or add Spa Sentry AFTER the water has reached its normal operating temperature. Spa Sentry works incredibly well in "locking in" the pH & Total Alkalinity for up to 3 months making maintenance simpler!

Routine Spa & Hot tub Maintenance:

Daily:

  • Test the Chlorine or Bromine residual.  Add as necessary to maintain 1.0 to 3.0 ppm Chlorine or 4.0 to 6.0 ppm Bromine.

Weekly:

  • Test pH.  Ideal is 7.4 to 7.6.  Acceptable is 7.2 to 7.6.
  • Add SpaGuard Natural Spa Enzyme and Stain & Scale Control following the label instructions. Both products help to keep your spa cleaner & scale free.
  • Shock your spa or hot tub with SpaGuard Enhanced Shock, Spa Shock or Chlorinating Concentrate.
  • Consider using AquaFinesse Hot Water Care Liquid or Hot Tub Serum to prevent the build up of biofilms in your spa's plumbing lines & on surfaces.

Monthly:

  • Top off SpaGuard Spa Sentry as per label instructions.

Every 3 to 4 Months:

  • Purge, drain, clean, polish and refill spa or hot tub based on usage.

SpaGuard Soft Soak non-chlorine care

SpaGuard Soft Soak, the non-chlorine, non-bromine care system

  1. Fill the Spa with water.
  2. Once filled with water, start equipment following the spa manufacturer's written instructions.
  3. Test water for pH, Total Alkalinity & Calcium Hardness.
  4. Balance spa water with SpaGuard Total Alkalinity Increaser & Calcium Hardness Increaser.  Follow label instructions .
  5. Add the following amount of Soft Soak products per 150 gallons of spa water: Add 5 oz. Soft Soak Spa Conditioner (used at start-up only); allow to circulate for about 30 minutes WITHOUT the air blower.
  6. Add the following amounts of Soft Soak products per 150 gallons of spa water:  Add 1.0 oz. Soft Soak Stain & Scale Control & Add 3.0 oz. Soft Soak Shock
  7. Allow water to circulate continuously for about 30 minutes with the air blowers (if equipped) OFF.
  8. Add 1.0 oz. of Soft Soak Sanitizer per 150 gallons of spa water & circulate continuously again for about 30 minutes.
  9. Retest spa water using Soft Soak Water Test Strips.  Sanitizer level should be between 30 and 50 ppm and the pH should be between 7.2 and 7.6.

Soft Soak  Maintenance Care

Weekly:

  1. Test spa water using Soft Soak Spa Water Test Strips for pH, Total Alkalinity, Calcium Hardness & Sanitizer levels.  DO NOT use SpaGuard Sentry in Soft Soak non-chlorine systems.
  2. Add the following amounts of Soft Soak products per 150 gallons of spa water:  Add 0.25 oz. Soft Soak Stain & Scale Control.  Add 1.0 to 3.0 oz. Soft Soak Shock, according to spa usage.  Use the higher amount if the spa is used 3 or more times per week.
  3. The Soft Soak Sanitizer level should be maintained between 30 and 50 ppm.  If the Sanitizer level is 11 to 30 ppm, add 0.5 oz. Soft Soak Sanitizer per 150 gallons of spa water.  If the Sanitizer level is 0 to 10 ppm, add 1.0 oz. Soft Soak Sanitizer per 150 gallons of spa water. The Soft Soak Sanitizer is active & effective at controlling bacteria at 30 ppm. DO NOT overdose.
  4. If pH is NOT between 7.2 and 7.6, adjust as needed with SpaGuard pH Increaser or Decreaser.
  5. Consider using AquaFinesse Hot Water Care Liquid (a better choice especially in normally "soft water" areas) or Hot Tub Serum to prevent the build up of biofilms in your spa's plumbing lines & on surfaces.

Monthly:

  • Chemically clean your filter with Soft Soak Filter Cleaner. Soft Soak Filter Cleaner is a the absolute superior product to use with Soft Soak or any biguanide based spa treatment system. It's specifically formulated to breakdown the biguanide molecule where other cleaners will not.

Pristine Blue for spas & hot tubs

Pristine Blue Start Up

ALWAYS Drain & Start with fresh water!

Day ONE - ALWAYS USE THE MEASURING CUP WHEN ADDING PRODUCTS!

  • Start with a clean spa.
  • For improved results, use the Pristine Fill pre-filter to remove mineral & other contaminants before they get in your spa.
  • KNOW THE SPA WATER VOLUME.  Almost all "problems" arise from the fact that spa owners don't know the proper gallonage of their spa or hot tub. 300 gallons or 400 gallons makes a huge difference!
  • MAKE SURE THE WATER IS IN BALANCE.  Water balance in a Pristine Blue® spa is a little different than in most spas.  Maintain these Pristine Blue® levels for the best in product effectiveness and efficiency.  The levels you need to attain are:
    pH - 7.2 to 7.6
Total Alkalinity: 50 to 90 ppm (this is the most important difference)
Calcium Hardness: 175 to 275 ppm
SpaGuard® Water Balancers and SpaGuard® Cleaners such as pH Increaser, Decreaser, Total Alkalinity Increaser, Spa Sentry, Calcium Hardness Increaser are 100% compatible with Pristine Blue®.  All cleaners & accessory chemicals such as SpaBoss Ultra conditioner are also 100% compatible.

  • DO NOT CONTINUE UNTIL THE WATER IS BALANCED!

Day TWO

  • Add 10 milliliters of Pristine Check® per 100 gallons of water. Circulate 2 to 4 hours.
  • Shock with 5 milliliters of Pristine Extra® per 100 gallons. Circulate 2 to 4 hours.
  • Clean the Filter thoroughly.
  • Add 5 milliliters of Pristine Blue® per 100 gallons of water. Run filter one hour.
  • Add 5 milliliters of Pristine Pure per 100 gallons of water (initially) then 2 milliliters per 100 gallons weekly.

After each use of the spa, shock with (2 oz) of Pristine Power per 500 gallons.

Special note:  If your spa has been operational or NOT operational for any period of time, we strongly recommend treating the spa FIRST with a spa plumbing cleaner such as Spa System Flush, Spa Purge, Swirl Away or AquaFinesse SpaClean or Hot Tub Serum Total Cleanse.  Cleaning the plumbing lines gets rid of stuff hiding in those concealed places where bacteria & problems hide & breed.  For more information about bio-films, please read this information.
